Flu Season is Coming

Each year, influenza kills more people in the U.S. than all other vaccine-preventable diseases combined. For the 2010-2011 flu season, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics have expanded the recommendation for flu vaccination to include all children ages six months to 18 years.

Inactivated (killed) influenza vaccine has been used in the United States for many years. The vaccine is updated yearly since influenza viruses change constantly. Protection develops in about two weeks and last up to one year. Some people who get the flu vaccine may still get the flu, but it will usually be a milder case than those who didn’t get the shot.

There is also a flu vaccine named FLUMIST that is administered by a nasal spray. Our office has this product and it is a favorite for our patients who don’t like shots. There are some limitations to who can receive this, so please call our office if you have questions.

A “preservative-free” version of the flu vaccine is available for those who are interested.
